Since 2011, the Metrotown area has seen over 775 affordable living units destroyed (People’s plan, appendix 1). The passing of the Metrotown Plan this summer is responsible for this loss. Mayor Corrigan and the Burnaby City Council unanimously voted for rezoning which will allow for demolition of approximately 3000 units of rental housing currently existing in low-rise apartment buildings. Based on an average of 2 people per unit, this will result in the displacement of over 6000 residents. Between December 2017 and January 2018, 8 projects in the area have moved along in their demolishment, which puts an additional 150 units of affordable housing at risk.

These are facts most certainly NOT to celebrate.

Instead, let’s celebrate the character, diversity and history of the Metrotown neighbourhood. Let’s celebrate the growing resistance against greedy governments and large corporate developers. Let’s celebrate community connections and neighbours helping neighbours. On Feb 17th from 2pm-5pm, we welcome you to join the growing movement to fight against landlord abuse, evictions and displacement and build solidarity in Metrotown. The gathering will include food, music, and a chance to tell your story and hear from others.
