Spend the surplus! Metrotown residents challenge anti-demoviction candidates to do “more than a moratorium” and dedicate Burnaby’s massive budgetary surplus to non-market replacement housing

UNCEDED SQUAMISH, MUSQUEAM, TSLEIL-WAUTUTH TERRITORIES (BURNABY): Burnaby’s mayoral candidate Mike Hurley and his supporters in the Green Party  have created a major challenge to Mayor Corrigan’s long rule with their centrepiece campaign promise of stopping demovictions in Metrotown. They have picked up the grassroots Stop Demovictions Burnaby campaign’s long standing demand for a “moratorium on demovictions” until existing purpose built rental housing can be replaced.

On Thursday October 18th, speakers from Stop Demovictions Burnaby and Metrotown tenants facing demoviction will hold a news conference to challenge Mayoral candidate Mike Hurley and the Green Party to adopt our vision of “more than a moratorium!” and implement policies to preserve the working class and tenant-majority character of Metrotown.

Mayor Corrigan and the BCA have created a displacement crisis in Metrotown and it calls for extraordinary action. We need more than a moratorium!
