Rally and action on Saturday, April 6, 2019
2:00pm in front of Metrotown Skytrain Station, 4401 Beresford Street
More information to come about the action next week!
We will hold a Townhall prior to this day on Wednesday, April 3rd! Join us at the Burnaby Neighbourhood House at 6:30pm to hear more about this call for action and to get signs ready for the rally.
This event is taking place on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
The housing crisis is not a local problem. It exists across the world, wherever housing is commodified and exchanged within a market system designed for profit. While owners and developers look to maximize their investments, tenants are forcibly displaced from their homes – pushed into more precarious housing, temporary shelters or onto the streets.
In 2018, there were numerous demonstrations and direct actions across Europe in the fight for housing justice. In Berlin, 25,000 people took to the streets against unaffordable rents and forced displacement; tenants in various communities organized actions, occupied vacant spaces and blocked evictions.
Organizers from Mietenwahnsinn in Berlin are calling for demonstrations across the world on Saturday, April 6 with actions being planned in Germany, Spain, France and elsewhere… and we want to join them!
In the lower mainland and across Turtle Island, we know all too well the reality of housing vulnerability: outrageous rents, deteriorating building conditions, and the protected power of landlords means looming evictions and increased homelessness.
Metrotown in Burnaby has been the epicentre of forced displacement through demovictions, and a clear example of housing built for profit not for people. We will gather here to stand in solidarity with other tenants across the world and join in the call for actions. There are no market solutions to this crisis; we need to build our collective power in order to push back against the forces that render us vulnerable to constant displacement and homelessness.
Homes for People not for Profit!
This event is organized by Stop Demovictions Burnaby, in response to the call for action of Mietenwahnsinn in Germany.
