Red Braid is organizing to confront anti-Chinese racism in western Canada. While Sinophobia is nothing new to the west coast of Canada and the United States, we see its contemporary iteration – a nativist moral panic around real estate speculation, money laundering, and the fentanyl crisis – as a racist defense of Canadian imperialist hegemony against China’s rising economic and political power.
Our campaign activities have included organizing counter-rallies and panels, and publishing anti-imperialist critiques of Sinophobia. We are working on connecting our research and analysis with working class Chinese communities to help build a grassroots power that can disrupt anti-Chinese hegemony in British Columbia.
Updates and Events
These terrible moments of anti-Asian racism are not only problems of bad individuals – they are a direct expression of the anxieties of Anglo-American empire in response to China's economic rise.
On December 1st, anti-war protestors gathered outside Liberal MP Joyce Murray's office to oppose war on China and the extradition of Meng Wanzhou.
Red Braid's "No War on China!" pamphlet argues that we need a clear, anti-imperialist, anti-war movement to oppose Canada's role in a new Cold War with China.
Join us Tuesday, December 1st from 12:00-1:00 PM for a picket outside Meng Wanzou’s ongoing extradition hearing at the Liberal MP Joyce Murray's office (2112 W Broadway, Vancouver). Stop the extradition of Meng Wanzhou! Fight anti-Chinese racism! No war on Iran! End US sanctions now!
Red Braid opposes the Western imperialist bloc that is reassembling against China, and especially, Canada’s central role in it. We believe the working class in the West must stand with the working class in China, not with Western imperial power. That means opposing war on China without compromise, and fighting sinophobia and the Canadian state head on.
Join Alliance Against Displacement to unpack the race, class, and national dynamics of the municipal elections in Metro Vancouver and rural BC.
